Some people think the best shopping in America is in New York City. It’s true, we have all the Diors and Guccis you could want, but our vintage shopping can be just as expensive as designer shopping, which, if you ask me, just ain’t right. Sure, we have used-clothing shops like Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn, and Cheap Jack’s (which has truly fabulous vintage clothing, but is not all that cheap), but what most savvy New Yorkers know is that vintage clothes can be bought much more inexpensively in other states, or at least upstate. In New York City, the demand for vintage clothes is high, and sellers know when they have a great item — and they price it accordingly.

When Old Becomes Vintage

Do you laugh when you see yourself in an old photograph and wonder, “How could I have worn that?” Looking back, it is surprising to see how much clothes have changed in our lifetimes. But the same thing happened in the times of our ancestors.

To understand the seemingly ridiculous extremes of what we call vintage clothes today, you need to understand the evolutionary fashion changes in our own time that turned clothes we once proudly wore into items we later disdainfully discarded.

Remember the 1980s when we wore thick shoulder pads in everything we owned, even sweatshirts and tees?

Clueless about how to give justice to those vintage pieces that have been hibernating in your closet since a long time? Don’t have the heart to discard them because of sentimental reasons and an eternal hope of finding that perfect occasion to wear your vintage dress or that exact piece that will complement your out-of-date vintage accessory? LA Vintage has the answer to rejuvenate your tired vintage wardrobe into a chic, classy trousseau – Discover the art of “Deconstruct, Reinvent, and Recycle” through Born-Again Vintage, brilliantly authored by Bridgett Artise and co-authored by Jane Karetnick.

Born-Again Vintage proves that all you need is a sewing machine and a set of innovative ideas to transform the inertia in your dated vintage clothes into a vivacious motion! The book includes step by step instructions of engaging DIY projects to blend the elegance of vintage eras with the modern style by putting together multiple vintage pieces that normally gather dust in the back of your closet. It shows how a few cuts and stitches can breathe life into your clothes, bringing back the unmatched quality of vintage into a new age. The USP of this book is the clarity of the instructions, which are quite easy-to-understand and can be executed even by an inexperienced designer.

Unleash the vintage fashion designer within you and contribute towards a greener environment by making a smart vest from an old blazer or an old-fashioned shirt, a cute mini dress or a charming corset from a cast off sweater, a suave belt from an unappealing brocade jacket, a funky denim bag you’re your yesteryear denims and so many more permutations and combinations from this book that will let your imagination run wild!

500 Days of Summer Star Wore $15 Vintage Prom Dress to the Oscars?!

Zooey Deschanel – I bought a Fifties prom dress for $15 and loved it so much I wore it to the Oscars.

Happiness to me is finding bargains in second-hand stores. I’ve been passionate about vintage clothes as far back as I can remember and I’ve developed a good eye for a bargain. In a New Orleans thrift store I got a Seventies ski suit that had been designed for the Winter Olympics. I picked that up for $30 and it’s worth much more.

Be Unique with Vintage Clothing from the 80’s

Remember the 80’s? Ronald Reagan was president, Michael Jackson was still becoming the King of Pop, and clothing was colorful, unique, and of a style that is no longer seen in regular retail stores. Those dresses, jackets, jeans, and accessories are now considered “vintage clothing” and wearing them today can give you a distinctive look that will make you seem cutting edge.

Fashions come back around every twenty years or so but the 80’s were so different from any other decade that most of the clothing will not be trendy again any time soon. Those years were a time when America was recovering from the scandals of Watergate and the horrors of Vietnam. Music was sappy and romantic and movies were campy. Theaters were filled with the sounds of laughter from films like Ghostbusters and The Breakfast Club.

Vintage dresses from the 80’s are now being sold everywhere in a rainbow of colors including  pinks, reds, blues, and pastels. High collars and hems above the knees are pretty much standard and seem to fit just fine in today’s business or social world. They worked back then and they are still making a strong showing today.

And what about Ferris Bueller? If you watch it today you might still be impressed by the slick dialogue and creative characters, but have you ever looked at the clothing fashions in the film? Some of the styles worn by Ferris and friends are being sold as new designs for hundreds of dollars today. Do those of you who are buying them know that you can purchase them as vintage clothing for a fraction of the cost?

That doesn’t just apply to the mainstream styles. In 1984, a film called “Streets of Fire”  was released starring Michael Pare, Diane Lane, and Rick Moranis. Billed as a “Rock and Roll Fairy Tale”, it surprised many with it’s popularity and broad appeal to all generations. The fashions seen in that movie are available today in vintage clothing stores and are considered some of the more popular attire for “Retro” and “Back to the 80’s” parties.

Films and music back in the Eighties, just like they do today, set the tone for what was in style and what wasn’t. Cindy Lauper’s wardrobe was pretty eclectic, but Belinda Carlisle wore what are now some of the most sought after vintage dresses. As a matter of fact, all of the styles from the 80’s are still available today as vintage clothing. Try something different. If you’re really looking to be unique, wear something the world hasn’t seen in twenty-five years.

If You Have a Shoe Thing, Vintage Shoes are a Gift from God

I have a shoe thing – I can’t deny it. No matter how many pairs of shoes I have, I want more. I once went to buy a pair of shoes that would be comfortable and go with any outfit. I’d decided to go for a pale tan leather, with moderately high heels. I hit one store after another looking for something just right. After a few hours or so I had four pairs of shoes that went with absolutely nothing I had, and still no shoes of the type I wanted. It was an expensive and, although extremely fulfilling spiritually (yes, finding great shoes is actually a spiritual experience for me), it was a pretty useless day! Shortly thereafter, I made a decision – I was going to switch to vintage shoes.

What are the advantages of vintage shoes? Most importantly, you can buy shoes until you drop, without breaking the bank. But right along with that priority is that I can buy shoes I really, really (yes, really) like!

Had I bought four pairs of vintage shoes during that fateful shopping trip, I not only would have saved a bundle, I probably also would have found the perfect pale tan leather moderately high-heeled shoes I was looking for in the first place.

Another side benefit was that I also discovered vintage clothing (don’t get me going on that!)

Do you have a shoe thing? Check out vintage shoes. You won’t be sorry.
